A Comparison of Fall Stockton Ship Channel Dissolved Oxygen Levels in Years with Low, Moderate, and High Inflows

Authors: Stephen Hayes, Jeannie Lee
Publication Date: December 01, 2000
Summary: Compares the dissolved oxygen monitoring results obtained during years with low (1994), moderate (1997), and high (1998) fall inflows into the Stockton Ship Channel to determine if high inflows significantly improve dissolved oxygen levels within the channel and to determine the necessity of the Old River closure. The study found that higher flow conditions contribute only partial improvement in late summer dissolved oxygen conditions within the canal, and concluded that the placement of the closure at the head of Old River may only produce marginal results in years with extremely low flow, but could at no time improve flow enough to duplicate the flow conditions achieved in the high flow year 1998.
